Reverend j.m. gates (born james m. gates july 14, 1884 – august 18, 1945) was an american preacher who recorded sermons and gospel songs extensively between the mid 1920s and 1940s. Several early recordings of "amazing grace" feature african american "singing preachers," the most popular of whom was reverend j. m. gates. gates viewed the song as "one of the good old familiar hymns" that would help his listeners return to the traditional religious values of the past. In 1927, williams founded his own label, which took its name from the 19th century concert artist sissieretta jones, who was billed as "the black patti". records were produced for the chicago record co. by starr piano company and were mainly sold by mail order.
