I've loaded blender gis add on as soon as i click on "ok" to bring in the google map, i get a black screen and my tools are gone and or frozen (see image). i've reinstalled same issue. i'm sure it's simple and i'm a complete newbie.

Could you try disabling the grid? i had one case where the map would not display as long as the grid was displayed, so i tried disabling the grid via "view" menu. blender is a free and open source software for 3d modeling, animation, rendering and more. download it today at blender.org. Even though i used the tif file in the temp folder, which the addon also used in his displace modifier, it did not work for me. what worked for me was saving it as a 32 bit float .exr.
