Freetown, 16th july 2025 — the freetown city council (fcc), under the leadership of mayor yvonne aki sawyerr, has intensified its city wide flood mitigation drive, working closely with communities to clear silt and garbage from critical drainage channels in flood prone areas. The campaign aims to improve sanitation and flood management by raising awareness of new sanitation byelaws, promoting the use of approved waste service providers, and implementing annual city wide flood prevention activities. The initiative, which commenced between march and april of this year, aims to enhance community resilience and minimize the risks associated with flooding by collaborating with residents in affected communities to address issues such as silt and garbage build up that hinder drainage. According to the mayor, the exercise involves removing garbage and silt from gutters, culverts and other waterways at flash flood points, and engaged communities on the need to have registered waste service providers. The city’s annual flood mitigation efforts, including the “dorti must go” campaign to clear drains and prevent blockages, are ongoing, but the mayor admitted that such activities are just a temporary fix. The intervention will continue daily through sunday, 20th july, focusing on cleaning clogged drainages and improved the preparedness of the communities against flooding and other hazards. in each community, 45 volunteers have been assigned to carry out the cleaning exercise.
