A waste to energy plant was built within the city by goal in partnership with freetown city council, fcdo and supported by the government of ireland through irish aid. operational since 2021, it now treats over 20 per cent of the city’s liquid waste, turning a public health risk into compost, biogas and fuel. Recently, representatives from irish aid visited several goal projects funded by the ireland civil society partnership programme. in 2021, goal completed the development of sierra leone’s first ever wastewater treatment plant in freetown, a city with a population of over one million people. The local partner goal began working in sierra leone in 1999 and implemented in 2021 the first fecal sludge treatment plant (fstp) in freetown. eawag has tested and piloted a low energy, low footprint technology that could be produced locally. He commended the administration of fcc for exercising patience since the process started in 2020 noting that goal will always lend technical support and guidance to freetown’s solid and liquid waste project.
