My Homelab Rack A 20 Year History Cavelab
My Homelab Rack A 20 Year History Cavelab I built a rack out of wood in 2004 — it was at home, and a lab, of sorts, so i guess that makes it a homelab 🙂 let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at 20 years’ worth of homelabbing ️. Most of my computer projects includes, or revolves around, my homelab — a 29u, 600x600 mm, rack in my home office.
Upcoming Homelab Projects Cavelab I started this home lab in 2020 with a 12u wall mount rack, a cable modem, and an edgerouter. six years later, i’ve upgraded to 10g uplinks, a pfsense firewall, 2.5g lan, and replaced zabbix with checkmk raw for monitoring. Last year — i wrote about plans for my home network, or home network v2, as i called it. let’s take a look at what i have done, what remains, and what has changed since then. The plan is to eventually put a small rack to my office closet. i’m not exactly sure what i’ll be running or hosting, but it will probably be home to my home built nas, a bout a dozen mini pc’s, my plex server, a few game servers, etc. Overall, this little rack surprised me at just how awesome the 10 inch home lab rack experience can be. i think it is a great size and footprint for those who want to even dip their toes in the water with running a home lab.

Wiki style guide compiles all the pieces and potential of a rack you can carry. i have one standard rack appliance in my home: a unifi dream machine pro. it is mounted horizontally in a coat. There are a number of different rack solutions, depending on what homelab category and chassis type you choose. a 19 inch rack is a standardized frame or enclosure for mounting multiple equipment modules. each module has a front panel that is 19 inches (482.6 mm) wide. Maybe there’s enough changes that i end up making this a yearly blog post to go over where my homelab is currently. i highly recommend that everyone who likes technology and messing around with software or hardware should start their own homelab. A hands on walkthrough of my homelab journey—from pi hole to a $1,000 mini rack—covering hardware, software, networking, and real world roi.
